Eastern Regional Report- October 16, 2010

Danny Garcia Makes Statement in Rocking Mike Arnaoutis…

Danny Garcia powered his way into the 140-pound title picture with a convincing fourth-round knockout of the durable Mike Arnaoutis. At the Arena in South Philly, televised on Telefutura, Garcia scored his most impressive win to date to improve to 19-0 with 13 knockouts.

More impressive was the fashion in which “Swift” disposed of his opponent. As the third round was nearing its conclusion, Garcia grazed Arnaoutis with a right then followed with a textbook left hook square to the chin of the veteran. Arnaoutis fell back on all fours with his gloves supporting him, quick to rise. But after standing up, Arnaoutis took four short steps only to fall again as the bell ending the round sounded.

Still reeling from the knockdown, Arnaoutis was in survival mode as the fourth round bell sounded and Garcia needed just 65 seconds to finish the fight.

Garcia told Maxboxing.com that in 2011, he wanted be position to earn a title shot. With his victory Friday night, he’s not far away.

Seth Mitchell Makes Third Nationally-Televised Appearance…

Brandywine, MD heavyweight Seth Mitchell made his third national TV appearance on Telefutura’s Solo Boxeo against Derrick Brown of New York. Brown, fighting as cruiserweight was 0-3-2 in his past five outings to this point but it should be noted his opponents had a combined record of 45-0 entering those contests. Brown had only fought once since 2007 a loss by TKO 2 to Jeremiah Graziano.

Mitchell had little problem remaining undefeated in his 20th pro bout and is positioned to become a contender in 2011. What Mitchell needs at this point are solid rounds and a stiff test to gauge exactly where he is in the division. Don’t expect his team to rush it but by the end of 2011, we should have a good idea of his potential.

DC/Baltimore Prospects Showcased in Two Shows Next Week…

Baltimore/Washington DC fans can enjoy two good shows next week, Thursday and Saturday, featuring some of the area’s top prospects.

TKO Boxing Promotions teams up with the Jonathan Ogden Foundation to host a charity event at Martins Valley Mansion in Cockeysville, MD on Thursday, October 21st. Emmanuel Taylor, 9-0 (8), headlines the show against Javier Perez, 7-3 (5), of Puerto Rico. Also scheduled on the card is Terrance Crawford of Omaha, Nebraska. Crawford stands at 12-0 with nine knockouts and is one of TKO’s best prospects. Details of his fight are not yet available.

Undefeated prospects Alantez Fox and Dale Roberson-El are also scheduled to appear.

Two days later, at the Pikesville Armory, Jake Smith and Baltimore Boxing host an event featuring four undefeated Beltway boxers. James Stevenson, 13-0 (10), faces 8-1 Philip McCants in a scheduled six-round bout. It will be Stevenson’s first fight since March and he should have little problem with McCants.

Heavyweight prospect Maurice Byarm faces 6-18-3 Mike Miller for the second time in a year. Byarm is big and has good feet but with a limited amateur career, remains a work in progress.

The card is nicely rounded out with cruiserweights Steve Wheeler, 6-0 (5), and Nick Kisner, 5-0 (3), plus featherweight Thomas Snow, 13-1 (8), makes his first appearance since January.

Joppy Returns on Fairfax Card…

Former champion William Joppy looks to score his 40th win as a pro when he faces Cory Cummings, 17-4 (13). The fight serves as the co-main event on the ICE Promotions card featuring Jimmy Lange vs. Joe Wyatt.
